The Architecture of Knowledge: Neurosciences Infrastructure and Dissemination at UNAM
Ximena Gómez González Cosío
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) fulfills its mission by weaving a research network that extends to its regional campuses and academic hubs across the country. In its diverse spaces, neuroscience research is conducted using cutting-edge tecnology that enables exploration ranging from the brain’s molecular mechanisms to its cognitive and behavioral functions. High-resolution microscopes capture the intricate dance of neurons, MRI machines map brain activity, and complex computational systems are designed following the model of mental processes. This infrastructure is not confined to university laboratories—it serves as a bridge for collaboration, integrating into national and international knowledge networks.
Yet UNAM’s commitment goes beyond frontier research. With a dissemination perspective that blends academic rigor and creativity, we transform technical language into accessible tales that engage audiences of all ages and contexts. Examples include initiatives like the Brain Awareness Week—part of a global campaign led by the Dana Foundation—where various UNAM’s academic entities, such as the institutes of Biomedical Research and Neurobiology, and the Faculties of Sciences, Medicine, and Psychology, organize interactive workshops, exhibitions, and the unique Neuropiñatas contest, which merges popular art and anatomy to reveal the brain’s architecture.
Events like El Aleph, Festival of Art and Science (which addressed “The Frontiers of the Brain and Artificial Intelligence”) and spaces like Universum, Museum of Sciences (with exhibitions such as The Brain: Our Bridge to the World) demonstrate how UNAM brings scientific dissemination to new heights. Through innovative museum installations and playful activities, complex concepts materialize into tangible experiences that inspire future generations of scientists.
This synergy between high-level infrastructure and creative outreach reflects UNAM’s commitment not only to scientific excellence but also to the democratization of knowledge—training researchers and fostering a society that is better informed and more engaged with science.
